ROWE RACING rocks the Ring:

First triumph at the ADAC 24h race at the Nürburgring

BMW factory drivers Nick Catsburg, Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly perform precision work in the BMW M6 GT3 with the #99 / Fourth place for the sister car with the #98

St. Ingbert, September 27, 2020 – Mission accomplished! ROWE RACING has finally won the ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring for the first time in its tenth year of existence and after two third places and one second place. In the 48th edition of the legendary “Eifel Marathon”, which will go down in the 50-year history of the race due to the lack of fans at the Nordschleife, extremely difficult weather conditions and a nine-and-a-half-hour interruption to the race, Dutchman Nick Catsburg steered the #99 BMW M6 GT3 across the finish line first with a lead of 15.4 seconds after 85 highly demanding laps and 2,157.13 kilometers. In doing so, he and his two British BMW works driver colleagues Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly made a dream come true. In addition, ROWE RACING gave BMW Motorsport its 20th overall victory in the Eifel on the 50th anniversary of the premiere success.

The sister car with the #98, in which two-time DTM champion Marco Wittmann, his BMW DTM drivers Philipp Eng and Lucas Auer from Austria as well as the Briton Tom Blomqvist were in action at the weekend, rounded off the strong performance of the team from St. Ingbert in fourth place.

“What a fantastic anniversary success! 50 years after the first overall victory for BMW in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, we have now come full circle with our 20th triumph. Congratulations to the entire ROWE RACING team and to drivers Nick Catsburg, Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly. They didn’t let themselves be rattled even by the difficulties we had, especially in the wet, and showed a terrific race to catch up in the final hours when the track initially dried off and then rain set in again. Thanks to a perfect team performance, all those responsible always made the right decisions at the right time. The final phase, in which every second mattered, was incredibly nerve-wracking. We have already made many attempts with the BMW M6 GT3 to win this extremely important and tradition-steeped race for BMW Motorsport. Now it has worked out and the joy about it is enormous,” said BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.

After a spectacular opening phase, the team’s two BMW M6 GT3s were initially unable to maintain their good grid positions of fifth (#99) and eighth (#98) in heavier rain. In return, all drivers consistently avoided all difficulties on the track. Later in the evening, the #99 had worked its way back up to fourth place and the #98 to twelfth, until the race was abandoned at 10:32 p.m. due to yet more heavy rain and was not resumed until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

After the restart, with the track slowly drying out, it was the BMW M6 GT3’s hour, with Alexander Sims setting the fastest race lap several times in succession. On the 67th lap, both ROWE RACING cars were on the podium for the first time. When the rain became heavier again 1:45 hours before the end of the race, the team reacted immediately and fitted Nick Catsburg with rain tires. One lap later he took the lead for the first time, which he only relinquished briefly for one lap during the last tire change. But after the rival Audi had rejoined the track one lap later behind the #99, Catsburg brought home the win.

"That was an insanely good team performance. We noticed right from the start of the weekend that the atmosphere in the team between drivers, engineers and mechanics was perfect. The decisive factor was that they kept the drivers perfectly to the strategy. They drove with all their talent and a lot of brains and delivered an absolutely flawless performance in sometimes the most difficult conditions. To achieve such a result, it simply has to be right. For us it's a huge pleasure to finally stand at the top of the podium in our tenth year. I was particularly pleased for Nick Catsburg, who had already come so close in 2017 and didn't make it in the end due to a tactical mistake on our part. That he of all people rocked it for us in the end this time is fantastic. Many thanks to everyone in the team, to BMW for providing us with such drivers, and of course to the drivers themselves for believing in our goal."

Hans-Peter Naundorf, Team Manager ROWE RACING

"This is just great. For ten years we'd failed so many times so narrowly and had a lot of bad luck, but now it's finally worked out. When Nick was on the Döttinger Höhe on the last lap, I knew that nothing would burn now. Especially in the penultimate sprint it was extreme when the rain got heavier. What the team delivered here is first class. It's just a shame that we couldn't celebrate this victory in front of 200,000 fans. I would have preferred it even more if they had all been here."

Michael Zehe, Managing Director ROWE MINERALÖLWERK GMBH

"I'm incredibly happy. I've wanted to win this race for so long, the Nordschleife is my favorite track. We've tried many times, now it's finally worked out. Many thanks to my teammates Alexander Sims, Nick Yelloly and the whole team. Our brief was to keep the car on the track and not allow ourselves any mistakes. That's exactly what we did."

Nick Catsburg, #99 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3

"It's just fantastic to have won this race. It almost feels a little strange to be comparatively recovered at the end of such a tough race because we had the break at night. Still, it's a great feeling. We've been trying for a long time, so that makes today's triumph special."

Alexander Sims, #99 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3

"This was my first 24h race, last year I didn't get to drive here. My teammates and the car were great, we made the right decisions at the right time. In the end, we got through the race without any mistakes. This is definitely the biggest success of my career so far."

Nick Yelloly, #99 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3

"Congratulations to my teammates. Unfortunately, we just missed the podium with the #98 BMW M6 GT3, but today the focus is on overall success for the team and BMW Motorsport."
